*Surry County, North Carolina is situated in the north toward the west part of
the state, and contains 726 square miles. The surface is mountainous and broken; soil, fertile. It is drained by
Yadkin River and its branches.
Capital, Rockford.
There were in 1840, neat cattle 12,609, sheep 12,128, swine 33,168; wheat 48,804 bushels produced,
rye 20,542, Indian corn 484,976, oats 115,018, potatoes 23,866, tobacco 83,070 pounds,
cotton 67,228; 19 stores, capital of $63,600; 10 forges, 1 cotton factorie 400 spindles,
15 tanneries, 225 distilleries, 1 powder mill, 3 potteries, 52 grist mills, 27 saw mills.
Capital in manufactures,
14 schools with 335 scholars.
Population: whites 13,093, slaves 1,778, free colored 208; total, 15,079.
